About UltraViolet

What is UltraViolet?
UltraViolet is a cloud-based digital rights collection that gives you greater flexibility with how and where you collect, access and watch the digital movies and TV shows that you purchase. When you buy a movie or TV show from a participating UltraViolet retailer, it can be automatically added to your UltraViolet Library so you can stream it over the Internet or download it for offline viewing on a variety of devices. Because UltraViolet offers so many viewing choices, you have greater freedom to choose where you want to watch – using a mobile device, computer, television, game console, etc. Please visit www.uvvu.com for a complete description of features and FAQ's about UltraViolet.
How does UltraViolet work?
Every time you buy an UltraViolet movie or TV show, you can add a digital "proof of purchase" to your UltraViolet Library. UltraViolet retailers, streaming services, and download players can then confirm your rights to the movie or TV show and enable you to watch.
What does it mean when I buy a DVD or Blu-ray disc and it "comes with UltraViolet?" Is this something else that I have to buy or sign up for?
When a DVD or Blu-ray comes with UltraViolet, it means that in addition to owning the disc, you are entitled to get the UltraViolet digital version included with your purchase. There are no additional costs to getting your UltraViolet movie version however you will need to log in to or create an UltraViolet Library to add the movie or TV show to your UltraViolet Library. Follow the instructions on the insert that came inside your disc packaging to get your UltraViolet Library started.
Can I share my UltraViolet Library with other people?
You can add up to five additional members to your UltraViolet Library. Each member will be able to access or add movies and TV shows to the UltraViolet Library as well as stream and download. As the owner of the UltraViolet Library, you can set access levels and parental controls. Please go to www.uvvu.com to access your account and learn about how to add and manage members in your UltraViolet Library.
What happens if an UltraViolet Retailer or Service Provider stops supporting UltraViolet or stops providing service altogether?
This is an unlikely event, but should this happen, your UltraViolet Library will not be affected. If this were to occur, you may need to link your UltraViolet Library to a new UltraViolet Retailer or Service in order to regain access to your movies and TV shows.
How do I link my UltraViolet Library to an UltraViolet service or retailer?
Participating UltraViolet services may give the option to link to your UltraViolet Library. You will need to do this using the UltraViolet retailer's website, mobile application or set top box application. You can remove links to any UltraViolet service by signing in to www.uvvu.com and selecting Our Account. From there you may unlink UltraViolet services linked to your UltraViolet Library. Note: By unlinking a service, you will be unable to access your UltraViolet Library through that unlinked service until you relink it to your UltraViolet Library.
What is an UltraViolet Library?
Your UltraViolet Library is a record of all of the official UltraViolet rights you have. For example, if you redeem an UltraViolet right that comes with a Blu-ray Disc or DVD you've purchased, or buy an UltraViolet movie or TV show online, those rights are stored in your UltraViolet Library. Your Library appears as a list of those movies and TV shows.
Is UltraViolet the same as Digital Copy or iTunes Digital Copy?
UltraViolet is different than Digital Copy in that UltraViolet is not contained on your disc and is not limited to any one specific digital media service. UltraViolet is not currently interoperable with your iTunes library, but you can watch your UltraViolet movies on iOS devices. Please go to www.uvvu.com for more information about UltraViolet.
Where do I find an UltraViolet redemption code?
Redemption codes are included with many Sony Pictures Blu-rays and DVDs. Look for the UltraViolet logo on the package when you shop. You'll find the redemption code inside the disc package or on the sticker on the outside of the package. For more information on new releases, go to the Sony Pictures Home Entertainment website at SonyPictures.com/movies/discanddigital.
How can I add previously purchased DVD's and Blu-ray discs to my UltraViolet Library?
Only movies and TV shows with UltraViolet rights can be added to your UltraViolet Library. This includes all titles you see for sale with the UltraViolet logo. Additionally, some retailers, content producers and studios may offer “disc to digital” programs in which movies and TV shows you already own can be upgraded with a grant of UltraViolet rights. Check with an UltraViolet retailer for details.
Do I need to make back-up copies of UltraViolet movies and TV shows?
Because your UltraViolet Library is stored in the cloud, you do not need to back up your movies and TV shows. For your downloaded files, you may want to create back up copies in the cloud or on another hard drive but each movie or TV episode can be downloaded up to three times.
Where can I purchase movies and TV shows that work with UltraViolet?
UltraViolet comes with DVD and Blu-ray discs that can be purchased from many different retailers. In some countries you may also purchase UltraViolet movies and TV shows digitally from certain online retailersas well as use disc-to-digital services offered by some UltraViolet retailers. Please check with your local UltraViolet retailers and services to see what purchase options are available in your country.
I see an expiration date for UltraViolet on the sticker and insert in my DVD or Blu-ray package. What does this mean?
The expiration date refers to the time limit for you to use your redemption code to add your movie or TV Show to your UltraViolet Library. For more information about our UltraViolet offer, please see the Terms of Use found on this site.
How do I add new purchases to my UltraViolet Library?
For online purchases, you can easily add new titles directly to your UltraViolet Library as part of your purchase process. Before you complete your check-out, you'll be given the opportunity to log into your UltraViolet Library (or create one if needed), and your movie or TV show will be automatically added. UltraViolet-enabled movies and TV shows on disc come with in-package instructions on how to log in (or create a Library) and add the title to your UltraViolet Library.
What do I do if I have an issue with my UltraViolet account (not my Sony Pictures Store account)?
Please go to the Help page to submit a Customer Support ticket.
What is an "UltraViolet right?"
When you purchase UltraViolet movies or TV shows, you get more than just a disc or single-use stream. You get rights that represent other ways you can enjoy your UltraViolet movie or TV show.

A few examples of what UltraViolet rights allow you to do:

Technical & System Requirements

Do I need to have Internet access in order to redeem or access my UltraViolet movies or TV shows?
Internet access is required to redeem codes, access your UltraViolet Library, and stream movies and TV shows. Once your title has been redeemed, you may download the title for offline viewing - though the initial download process does still require an Internet connection.

Watching UltraViolet

What does it mean when an UltraViolet movie or TV show is "unrated?"
An unrated movie or TV show has not been given a rating by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) or the TV industry (i.e., G, TV-G, PG, TV-Y7, PG-13, R, NC-17). Most adult programming is unrated, though it is typically also labeled specifically as "Adult" to support appropriate parental controls. Direct-to-video programming, including children's programs, are usually unrated as well.
Will my movies and TV shows play in countries other than where I purchased or redeemed them?
If you download a movie or TV show in your local region to an UltraViolet Player, you should be able to play it on that Player anywhere in the world. You will also be able to stream movies and TV shows already in your UltraViolet Library but you will not be able to add new movies or TV shows until you are back in your home country. However, in some countries there may be certain geographic restrictions that could limit your ability to access, stream and download videos from your UltraViolet Library.
What parental control options are available to me?
If you are the owner of your UltraViolet Library, you can restrict your access and other members' access to movies and TV shows based on rating (e.g., PG, PG-13, R, TV-Y, TV-Y7, TV-G). To do so, go to www.uvvu.com and Sign In. Go to Our Account, select the member's profile name or icon, and adjust the settings on the parental controls tab. If necessary, select "Turn parental controls ON" and select the triangle next to a ratings system to show the possible settings, then adjust the settings as needed. Choose "N/A" to turn a ratings system off. If the member is underage, you must be identified as the legal guardian in order to change parental control settings for that member. You can set separate parental controls for movies and TV shows, and you can specifically block anything that has been labeled as "adult". Some Players and other services may require that parental control settings be set separately on the Player or service. Additionally, though a member may be able to see information about movies and TV shows above their parental control levels when shopping at an UltraViolet retailer, they will not be able to add them to the UltraViolet Library.
Am I able to set Parental Controls to limit which programs my children can watch?
Yes, you can set and manage Parental Controls in your UltraViolet Library. These controls will be applied to each UltraViolet service that you use for streaming and downloading UltraViolet movies and TV shows. Please go to www.uvvu.com to access your account and manage members and Parental Controls.
Can more than one person access and watch UltraViolet video simultaneouly with another member of the same UltraViolet Library?
There can be up to three simultaneous video streams between members of the same UltraVIolet Library. Please see the FAQ's on www.uvvu.com for additional information.
Why am I seeing a message that says, "Your current device configuration does not support HD content?"
This is due to your system having a non-HD compliant configuration. The root causes for this could be having the wrong display drivers installed on your computer, a non HD-capable display, a computer that does not support High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection - HDCP), a monitor connected with non-HDMI cable, or a video display card that is not HDMI compliant. Please check your computer or devices product information or customer support for details about your particular configuration.
